FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 11, 2010
( Johnston , RI ) Operation Stand Down Rhode Island announces that the first house in Rhode Island to provide residence for homeless women veterans will be dedicated and named in memory of Marine Corporal Holly A. Charette. The official opening ceremony for the home, located at 22 Milton Street , Johnston , RI 02919 will be held Monday, July 19, 2010 at 1 p.m. Charette’s parents, Ed and Regina Roberts and members of the military and community will participate. All are invited to attend. For additional details please contact Anthony DeQuattro, Operation Stand Down President at (401) 286-6699.
Corporal Charette, killed in action at age 21 while serving in Anbar province, Iraq , was the seventh Rhode Islander and the first Rhode Island woman to give her life in duty to her country. Nicknamed “The Marine Who Brings Good News” for her cheery, positive spirit and military occupation as a mail carrier, she had been assigned to checkpoints in Fallujah where she and a group of fellow Marines were struck by a suicide bomber on June 23, 2005 while returning to their base.
Based at Camp Lejeune , N.C. and assigned to Headquarters Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Charette who had been in the Marine Corps for three years was posthumously promoted to the rank of Corporal. According to her family, the 2001 graduate of Cranston High School East decided to become a Marine as a result of the events of 9-11.
The new home will be the fourth provided by Operation Stand Down Rhode Island, a non-profit organization founded in 1993 by veterans, for veterans. Currently, 25 men who have served their country reside in the other three houses, located in Johnston (the original located at 1010 Hartford Ave. ), West Warwick (the second that opened, at 790 Providence Street ) and Providence ( Bissell Street , a home specifically for disabled veterans).
“It is very fitting to honor Holly’s ultimate sacrifice and courageous, generous spirit by naming this historic home for her,” states Anthony DeQuattro, USMC, Operation Stand Down President. “We are deeply humbled to remember her, to extend her love to fellow women veterans by providing this home, and to have the partnership of her family.”
Charette’s family and friends have established a memorial scholarship in her name, funded by an annual Memorial Motorcycle Run each September and Spirit Run road race held to be held every May. A post office in the City of Cranston was dedicated in her memory in October, 2006.
“The Marine Who Brought Good News” now brings good news to women veterans – the good news that they have a home - and that they will never be forgotten.
